HISTORY
The PhD program in economics started in 1985, a year later the institution of PhD programs in Italy.
Since then it has been known as one of the leading PhD programs in Italy, with PhD students of other
Universities coming to attend our graduate courses.
During the years, approximately 200 students graduated
from our PhD program. They were mainly Italians, but a significant and growing number from foreign countries (African, Asian,
and Eastern European countries).
DEGREE PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION
The PhD program consists of three years. In the first year students are required to attend advanced courses.
Students are admitted to the second year of the program upon satisfactory performance in the exams at the end of the
first year. The second and third year are devoted to the development of the PhD thesis. In this period students are
required to attend seminars organised in the department. At the end of the third year candidates needs to
defend their thesis in front of a panel of examiners (partially external).
2012-2014 PROGRAM
This year we propose a partially joint PhD program with sociologists and historians. In the first year the course will
consist in a common part, around 2/3 of basic economics (micro, macro and econometrics) and 1/3 of sociological and
historical subjects. At the end of this period students will be evaluated through exams and they will be able to
choose among two different specialization fields: economics or socio-historical subjects.
